Beef bourguignon - cupcakes and wine help erase mistakes

Rule of thumb: When following the recipe for the 1st time, it is important to follow the recipe.  Sound redundant? Of course it is.  When the recipe calls for the butcher to give about 18-20 pieces of beef, make sure you don't order just in pounds, because you could end up with 50 pieces of beef to brown before you put them in the oven to stew.

A small glass of wine (nice French Pinot Noir for only $10.99 at Whole Foods to keep with ze French theme) and a cupcake (okay, and a truffle) helped ease the pain of my mistake as it took double the time (and a lot of oily splatter) to brown the meat before it braises slowly.  House smells awfully good though so perhaps this meal will be one to remember? Lucky I didn't eat all the lardons while waiting for all the damn beef to brown.

I'll let you know what the consensus is once in-laws, hubby, kids, and mom taste it tonight, but after a few glasses of Pinot, is anyone going to care?? I hope so! Happy Valentine's Day to all!
