I am no Mongolian BBQ expert but as we loved this place when it was Hong Kong Bistro, we promised the owner, Chou, to give it a try this weekend. Last night, we met friends there who lived right across the street for dinner. I had read besides Mongolian, you can order some Chinese food from the menu. Well, first miss, they did not have the Chinese food to offer, as the waitress explained that it's on the menu but they're not prepared to offer that food yet. Alrighty then. So for $13.95 all you can eat (only thing you can eat) Mongolian includes white rice, seafood, meat, veggies, and noodles, you get a choice of wonton soup, eggdrop, or hot and sour soup. Wonton soup was average, served hot, and the wonton itself was tasty albeit a bit tough and chewy. Their fried wontons with cheese were good, reliably crispy, hot, and gooey cheese inside with sweet sauce for dipping.

My friend, Cathy, enjoyed her hot and sour soup, and then we all marched to the line to get our food cooked. If you haven't had Mongolian, here's how it works; you grab a bowl, filler up with whatever you want, then sauce it up (instructions are printed for idiots like me who could not figure out what to do with the gazillion bowls of waters and sauces), hand it to the cooks to grill on the big round grill. They drizzle the sauce slowly onto your food to flavor it up and few minutes later, tada! Your dinner.

I was expecting robust flavor or at least somewhat bold flavor after all the ladling work I did, but sadly, it was seriously lacking. The waitress instructed us to add more Mongolian sauce and soy sauce then cook it up; we tried that on the 2nd bowl, and still, the dish was bland. Also, my meat was a bit dry and gray possibly due to its age, and we ended up adding duck sauce to add some flavor to our lackluster bowls. I miss their dim sum that was pretty good but alas, they offer that no more. They're new at this venture, and as loyal as we are to Chou, the food needs improvement in order for it last. Hopefully, it will improve; otherwise, perhaps they can return to the status quo? (dim sum, dim sum, dim sum)

  1. Wow, you sound like a newbee to mongolian. I have eaten mongolian for about 39 years around here. You need to go with a pro to figure out how to create a great mongolian dish before you review someone in business. If you want dim sum, go to a dim sum vendor dont go to a mongolian eatery!
