Red Elephant Pizza
This past July 4th weekend gave me new excuses to try different places, so my daughter (foodie-in-training) and I decided to pig out on pizza for a lovely mother and daughter day at Red Elephant. Casual dining with a small arcade and colorful animals on the walls, it is a cutesy, fun environment for families. It offers salads, burgers, sandwiches, wings, appetizers, and even has a small bar area and a few flat screens.
Having heard of their pizza and desserts, we order the medium size vegetable pizza called "Elephant's Garden" (they also have a kids menu but we wanted a pizza to share). Service is quick and friendly (very important if you have kids), and our drinks come quickly as does our small caesar salad to start with. Soon after we finish our salad ($2.69, salad is fresh but dressing is a bit salty), the pizza comes crisp and hot, with its trademark braided crust and cut into squares (great for small hands). The veggies are cut small, another nice touch so that toppings don't come off easily when biting.
Final result? While a tad overpriced, it's in their sauce that makes the pizza tasty; it's slightly sweet and tangy at the same time and full of flavor. Veggies were fresh and not burnt, but the crust, although crispy, was a bit bland. Overall, a tasty pizza for $12.49 that we devoured (no leftovers) and feeling bold, we ordered the banana split ice cream pie (it just sounds good, right?). It was small ($4.49), but it was a nice ending to our pizza meal, and who doesn't love ice cream in this heat? The biggest critic, my daughter, said she enjoyed the meal, but that PIzza Alley in St. Augustine is still her absolute favorite. Allrighty then, perhaps we can come back when we can't get to St. Augustine but rather we only have time to hang out in Mandarin!
