This weekend was not only Mother's Day weekend, but it was a time for discovery! Friday night, Eric & I finally made it to Whitey's Fish Camp, having vaguely heard about its location, we drove around Fleming Island until we stumbled upon the mass of cars in the parking lot. Right on the water with boats sauntering up all night, live music on the deck, and plenty of adults, families, and people waiting to feast on fried seafood and washing it away with beer, we waited grumpily (we were starving) but patiently for a table outside.
Once seated, we enjoyed watching the sun go down and ordered plenty of fried seafood to start. Service on a night like this is excrutiatingly slow; don't expect get in and out of here in 1 hour. Our hush puppies came hot, fresh, and quite large - very good. Next was my fish-n-chips, 2 perfectly fried and beer battered catfish with crispy hot salty chips and a lovely cole slaw side all for only $7.95 (dinner portion is much larger for around $12.95). Not greasy at all, I inhaled my meal (did I mention we were starving?). Eric ordered the po boy fried shrimp sandwich that came with fries; he thought it was good but liked mine better.
Sunday, I craved pizza for Mothers Day (although we also celebrated on Saturday at Bowl of Pho, it was all eat feast this weekend) so we headed to Rosina's Italian Restaurant & Pizza on Wells Road. Having heard from my NY pizza foodie friend, Cathy, that this place dishes out a nice thin crust NY style pizza, we ordered a simple cheese thin crust ($7.99) plus their gourmet large meat lovers and deluxe pizza to feed the rest of the family (under $20). Toddler had the ziti with butter on the side ($4.99). Overall, the pizza was good but not fantastic, crispy on the bottom with a good amount of cheese; the gourmet meat lovers/deluxe half and half pizza was average, tasty, well seasoned, but a little boring for me. I tried the meat sauce that came with my toddler's ziti, and while fresh, it was a bit on the sour side and lacked richness. For what we paid for 6 people (under $30), it can hit the pizza spot. They have many pasta dishes and other items besides pizza so it's worth a shot.
Lastly, I went to Whole Foods this morning hungry (NEVER do that, your grocery bill will more than double!) and discovered Tate's chocolate chip walnut cookies. Tate's Bake Shop is in the Hamptons, and man, can they do a great bagged cookie! I could eat the entire bag, very dangerous. Message? Don't afraid to try something new, you must might discover a new favorite!
Sharing food adventures in Jacksonville and beyond, are you hungry?
