Off King Street in the Riverside/Avondale area lies a unique pub named Kickbacks, complete with beer handles on the ceiling, live music, and even better, some very interesting tasty pub fare. Jacksonville certainly has it fair share of barbecue joints, bars, chicken wing haunts and such, but this place hits them all and then some. I had about one and half hours to kill for lunch with a friend, and this place hit the spot!
Now the menu had everything from breakfast, vintage items (ramen noodles, anyone?), lunch items such as the Fat Julian sandwich that houses chicken nuggets, fries, and cheesesticks in a hoagie, salads, pastas, sandwiches, and appetizers, desserts, dinner items and beer, that is, over 60 some beer selections. You will not need to order the same item twice with selections like this, and that plain makes me happy. Focaccia bread is made in-house so paninis were suggested to us, but I was not in the mood for that today.
It is a bit dark inside and slightly stinky (it IS a bar, after all), but when my fried chicken wings with Thai sauce comes out (12 for $8.49) extra crispy with clean celery stalks with ranch dressing, I did not care how dark or stinky it was. Needing a side item, I order the sweet potato fries for $2.50 and expected the typical fries. It's far from it, and I'm glad! Crinkle cut, lightly sprinkled with powdered sugar, and served with cinnamon sugar butter, they are light, non greasy and delicious. Very unexpected.
My foodie buddy, Cathy, orders the southwestern chicken wrap and mac-n-cheese at the waitress's suggestion. She fully enjoyed her wrap, stating it was very flavorful, but thought the famous mac-n-cheese could have been more seasoned. Even though it is made with four cheeses, she wanted more cheese flavor. But then, we are quite picky with our mac-n-cheese, being guilty of making it with more cheese than is legally allowed and enough salt to raise your blood pressure, but that's just us.
I will be back - I plan on attacking the Fat Julian and a dessert, perhaps after exercise class....a long exercise class....
